  • Total Time: 8 hours 55 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

– 6 tablespoons butter

– 3/4 cup packed light or dark brown sugar

– 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup, corn syrup, or pancake syrup

– 6 to 8 slices French bread, 1-inch thick, cut into 3/4-inch cubes

– 4 large eggs

– 1 cup half-and-half

– 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

– 1/4 teaspoon salt

– Sweetened whipped cream for serving

– Fresh strawberries or raspberries for serving

– Plant-based milk like oat milk

– Flaxseed mixture for vegan

– Gluten-free bread varieties

Instructions

1-First, melt the butter, brown sugar, and maple syrup together until the sugar dissolves, stirring to combine.

2-Lightly grease a 9ร—13-inch baking pan with cooking spray and spread the brown sugar mixture evenly across the bottom.

3-Arrange the bread cubes in a single layer over the mixture.

4-In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, vanilla extract, and salt, then pour the mixture evenly over the bread cubes.

5-Cover the pan and refrigerate for 8 to 10 hours to let the bread soak up the flavors.

6-The next morning, remove from the refrigerator, uncover, and place in a cold oven. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until golden and bubbling.

7-Optionally, for a caramel layer on top, bake for 20 minutes, flip the bread pieces with a flat spatula, and bake for another 10-15 minutes.

8-Serve warm, topped with sweetened whipped cream and fresh berries.
