๐Ÿฅช Crispy pressed bread with melty Swiss, savory pork and ham, tangy pickles, and mustard โ€“ authentic Cuban delight!
๐Ÿ– Hearty, flavorful handheld meal perfect for lunch, game day, or any time you crave bold tastes.

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 4 sandwiches

Ingredients

– 1 Cuban bread loaf, cut into 8 to 12 inch lengths

– Ham, sliced

– Roast pork or marinated pork, sliced

– Swiss cheese, sliced

– Pickles, sliced

– Mustard

– Optional salami, sliced

– Optional lettuce

– Optional tomatoes, sliced

– Optional mayonnaise

Instructions

1-First Step: Prepare the bread and fillings Slice the Cuban bread into 8 to 12 inch lengths, then cut each piece horizontally. If the bread is very soft, handle it carefully so it keeps its shape. Lay out the ham, roast pork or marinated pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard so the sandwich can be built quickly and evenly.

2-Second Step: Spread the mustard Spread mustard on the inside of both bread halves. Use a moderate amount so the flavor comes through without making the bread soggy. For Key West-style Cuban Sandwiches, this is also the point where a thin layer of mayonnaise can be added if desired, though it is not part of the classic version.

3-Third Step: Layer the meats Add the sliced ham first, then the roast pork or marinated pork. If you are making a Tampa variation, include a layer of salami at this stage. Press the fillings gently into an even layer so the sandwich cooks evenly and stays stable when sliced.

4-Fourth Step: Add cheese and pickles Place Swiss cheese over the meats, then add sliced pickles. The cheese should sit close to the bread so it melts well and helps hold the sandwich together. The pickles add the bright, tangy note that makes Cuban Sandwiches distinct from many other pressed sandwiches.

5-Fifth Step: Close and press the sandwich Place the top half of the bread over the filling and lightly press the sandwich by hand. Brush the outside with a small amount of butter or oil if you want a more golden crust, though many home cooks also press the bread dry for a lighter finish. Heat a skillet, griddle, or sandwich press over medium heat.

6-Sixth Step: Cook until crisp and hot Cook the sandwich for about 3 to 5 minutes per side in a skillet, or until the bread is crisp and the cheese begins to melt. If using a press, follow the machine instructions and cook until the outside is browned and the filling is heated through. Avoid high heat because it can brown the bread too quickly before the cheese melts.

7-Seventh Step: Finish and slice Once the Cuban Sandwiches are ready, remove them from the heat and let them rest for 1 minute. Slice diagonally or into manageable sections for serving. This short rest helps the filling settle and makes cleaner cuts.

Notes

๐Ÿ”ฅ Use a heavy skillet or panini press to achieve that signature crispy exterior.
๐Ÿž Seek out authentic Cuban bread for the best texture; French bread works as substitute.
๐Ÿง€ Place cheese on both sides of fillings to help seal and melt everything together.
